Paving project begins May 3 Published April 21, 2010 By Sarah Olaciregui 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- With warmer temperatures come outdoor sports, flowers and plenty of sunshine, but it also means the start of road construction. This year, Hanscom will be no exception as a major roadway and parking lot paving project begins in early May and lasts until early September. The following is a schedule of some road and gate closures. The dates are weather dependent and may change. Updates will be posted in the Hansconian and on www.hanscom.af.mil. May 3-June 2 The Building 1614 overflow lot, located just north of the Hanscom Federal Credit Union, will be closed May 3 through June 2. Alternate parking will be located at the BX lot. Pedestrians will not be permitted within the work zone and may use the sidewalk along the south side of the credit union to cross Eglin Street toward Building 1614. During this time, the credit union's drive-up teller and ATM will be closed, but will open at the end of construction activities each day. May 3-June 12 The front loop of Building 1305's parking lot will be closed May 3 through 28. The west lot will close May 29 through June 12. Alternate parking for this building will be the lot at Building 1240. May 6-9 The Vandenberg Gate and visitor's center will be closed May 6 through 9. Base access, including a search pit, will be temporarily located at Gate 2, which is the Marrett Street, Airport Road gate. All trucks must enter the base through Gate 2, but other traffic may choose to enter through Gate 2 or the Hartwell Gate. If rain causes disruption of the project, the new gate closing days will be May 13 to 16. May 6-19 Langley Road, within base limits, will be closed May 6 through 19. The alternate access to base housing will be via Ent Road. May 6-June 2 Vandenberg Drive between Eglin Street and Marrett Street will be closed May 6 through June 2. Travelers will be directed through Arnold, Eglin, Chennault and Grenier streets. For those traveling on Arnold Street, please keep in mind the speed limit is 20 mph. May 6-June 23 There will be reduced travel lanes on Vandenberg Drive between Langley Road and Eglin Street from May 6 through June 23. Traffic will be down to a single lane, alternating on the north and south sides of the median strip. Travelers will notice the most disruption from May 6 through 19 and again between June 17 and 23. May 20-June 2 Marrett Street from Vandenberg Drive through Barksdale Street will be closed May 20 through June 2. Alternates routes include Eglin, Chennault and Grenier streets. Additionally, Forbes Street from Barksdale Street through Building 1614's southwest entrance will be closed May 20 through June 2. Drivers will be rerouted to Arnold, Eglin, Chennault and Grenier streets. The access to Building 1614's parking lot will be from Barksdale and Eglin Street. Finally, Barksdale Street at the intersection of Marrett Street will have reduced travel lanes from May 20 through June 2. Flaggers will direct a single lane of traffic through a signalized intersection during construction times. June 3-July 21 Construction on Barksdale Street begins June 3 and lasts until July 21. More detailed information on road closures is included below. June 19-June 20 The Vandenberg Gate will again be closed June 19 and 20. Base access, including a search pit, will be temporarily located at Gate 2, which is the Marrett Street, Airport Road gate. June 24-July 7 The central section of Barksdale Street, from Marrett to Grenier streets will be closed in phases from June 24 to 30. During this time, traffic will detour through Grenier, Chennault, Forbes and Marrett streets. At times, there will be only one access point to the gas station, Buildings 1534 and Building 1521. Alternate parking will be located at Building 1240. July 8-14 Parking lots around Kirtland Street will be closed from July 8 through 14. Flaggers will direct traffic to alternate parking lots near the street. Portions of Kirtland will be closed at various times, but flaggers will direct traffic as needed. July 15-21 Barksdale Street, from Eglin to Grenier streets will be closed July 15 to 21. The gas station will be closed on July 17. Drivers may detour through Forbes, Chennault, Grenier and Marrett streets. Parking lots along Kirtland Street will also be closed during this time frame. Aug. 5-8 The Hartwell Gate will close Aug. 5 through 8. Again, the Marrett Street Gate will open to accept detoured traffic. If rain causes delays, the gate will close Aug. 12 through 15. Aug. 5-18 From Aug. 5 though 18, construction will take place at the intersection at Grenier and Barksdale Street. Traffic will still flow north, south and west, but no traffic may go east, in the direction of the Hartwell Gate. Simultaneously, portions of Barksdale Street will close in sections from Grenier Street to the Hartwell Gate. Traffic will be detoured from Bestic Drive to Schilling Circle and then to Grenier Street. Aug. 28-29 For the final time, weather permitting, the Hartwell Gate will again be closed Aug. 28 and 29. Detoured traffic may enter through the Marrett Street Gate or Vandenberg Gate. If weather does not cause too many delays, all construction should be complete by Sept. 5. Please take note that even though a road may not be closed, construction may be taking place on the curbs and sidewalks. Drivers are urged to use caution when in construction areas. Please note that pedestrians are not permitted within construction zones. Unauthorized personnel within construction areas create a hazard to themselves and workmen. It is imperative that pedestrians avoid barricaded or cordoned off areas and follow posted signage at all times. Flaggers will be placed to direct traffic. Signs will also be placed around the base to show drivers how to proceed through the detours. All construction activities are weather dependent and may change. Unless otherwise noted, normal traffic patterns will resume after construction activities have stopped each day. Please watch the Hansconian and www.hanscom.af.mil for updates.
