Let the games begin Published April 15, 2010 By Sarah Olaciregui 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Get the courts ready, the nets up and the adrenaline pumping because the Hanscom Olympics are set to take place May 1 through 7. Those who are interested can participate in tennis, racquetball, basketball, bowling, track events, volleyball, swimming events, dodgeball and an obstacle course. Eligible participants include active-duty servicemembers, dependents, DoD civilians and contracting unit personnel. "Last year's Hanscom Olympics was a very spirited unit competition, and this year looks to be as much or more," said Jerry Turnbow, the Fitness and Sports Center director. "We encourage all unit personnel, if not competing, to support your wing team in their quest for the gold." Teams will come from the seven different base organizations: Electronic Systems Center, 350th Electronic Systems Wing, 551st Electronic Systems Wing, 554th Electronic Systems Wing, 653rd Electronic Systems Wing, 66th Air Base Wing and Air Force Research Labs. There may be two teams per organization per sport and teams will represent the composition of organization. The minimum team make-up allowed is one male and female and one active-duty member and civilian. A sprint triathlon will start off the games on May 1 at 10 a.m., as participants swim 500 meters, bike 9.4 miles and then run 3.2 miles. On Monday, May 3, an opening ceremony marks the official kick off, followed by formation run and a dodgeball game. The remainder of events takes place on May 4, 5 and 6 with tug-of-war, a 5K fun run and the closing ceremony all on Friday, May 7. All events will count toward the first, second and third place Hanscom Olympic standings and T-shirts will be awarded to first place teams or individuals. During the closing ceremony the winning organization will receive the Commander's Cup. Those interested in competing in any of the events must sign up by April 23. Each organization has a Hanscom Olympics point of contact that will provide further information about each of the events. Organization Points of Contact: Electronic Systems Center: Capt.
