Now that winter weather has finally arrived, the 66th Security Forces Squadron would like to remind the Hanscom community that leaving a running vehicle unattended is in violation of Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 90: Section 16A, Stopped motor vehicles; operation of engine; time limit; penalty.

The law states, "No person shall allow or permit the unnecessary operation of the engine of a motor vehicle while said vehicle is stopped for a foreseeable period of time in excess of five minutes." Members of the community should be mindful of the "No idling" zones on Hanscom and, when parking a vehicle, individuals should ensure they turn off the engine and take the keys with them.

Another effect of the winter weather is the appearance of snow and thick frost on vehicles. AFI31-204, 66th Air Base Wing Supplement, Air Force Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision, dictates motorists clear all snow, ice and other obstructions from the windows of their cars for clear visibility in all directions.

Snow and ice must be removed from vehicle roofs, hoods, and trunks to avoid the possibility of it flying off and endangering others. Motorists in violation of these infractions can be cited by security forces and will be directed to clear off their vehicles prior to being allowed to drive on the installation.
