Hanscom nominees for Air Force Athlete of Year due in three weeks Published Sept. 1, 2009 By Capt. Geoff Buteau 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The deadline for wings on Hanscom to submit their best male and female athlete nominees for the 2009 Air Force Athlete of the Year Award to the Fitness and Sports Center is Sept. 18. The winners of the Air Force wide award will be recognized at the annual Air Force Fitness and Sports Awards Ceremony at the Air Force Fitness Program Managers Training in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. First the nominees from Hanscom will compete among each other in a board held by members of the 66th Force Support Squadron's Force Sustainment Flight, then they will submit the top male and top female to Air Force Materiel Command. The male and female finalists from each Major Command will then be submitted to the Air Force Services Agency, Directorate of Programs, by Oct. 16 to determine the award recipients. In addition to basic identification, background, and physical information, the most pertinent information for nominees' packages must contain specific athletic accomplishments. This includes a listing of outstanding performances or records achieved in one or more sports during Armed Forces, national, international, and Conseil International du Sport Militaire competitions from October 2008 through September 2009. Those nominating athletes may also cite athletic performance at local, regional, or state levels, as well as the individual's contribution to team results. To complete the submission, nominees must include a letter signed by their commanding officer in a field grade or above, one photo of themselves in a military uniform framed around their head and shoulders, and two photos showing them during athletic competition. All photos must be 5-by-7 inches and digital photos are acceptable.
