Operation Night Hoops, sponsored by the 66th Security Forces Squadron and the 66th Services Squadron Youth Center will wrap up another successful season tonight in support of Hanscom's youth.

Night Hoops is a yearly event that began six years ago and runs each Friday evening during the month of March. Popular with Hanscom's teens, the program offers the ability to play basketball, eat pizza and just "hangout" with friends said Ann-Marie Ely, Youth Sports and Fitness director.

"This year we've added a game room tourney where those not interested in basketball, still get a chance to participate in the program," she said. The program is open to Hanscom teens between the ages of 13 and 18, and offers a stress free environment while at the same time becoming acquainted with those who serve the base in the Hanscom law enforcement community.

"Operation Night Hoops provides a positive forum for community agencies to stress the importance of enjoying a drug, alcohol and tobacco free life and offers positive alternatives for Hanscom's youth," said Staff Sgt. Michael Mandello, 66th Security Forces Squadron, Police Services, noncommissioned officer in charge.

In addition to 66 SFS and 66 SVS personnel, program support includes volunteers from the Town of Lincoln's Fire and Police departments as well as Hanscom Fire Department personnel.

The program isn't all "take" as teens have to "give" as well. In order to participate in game room tournaments and Night Hoops, teens are required to sit through a hot topics discussion period covering such areas as domestic violence, the Lincoln DARE program, alcohol and substance abuse.
