Fireworks safety advice, tips Published July 2, 2008 By By Robert Hildreth Base Fire Chief HANSCOM AFB, Mass. -- Although consumer fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts -- and on Hanscom without the approval of the installation commander -- many may be traveling to states this summer where fireworks are legal. Use of consumer fireworks can lead to devastating burns, fires and even death. The National Fire Protection Association does not endorse the use of consumer fireworks and instead encourages the public to enjoy displays of fireworks conducted by trained professionals, according to the association's Web site, www.nfpa.org. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 face the highest risk of fireworks injuries. Those who happen to visit an area that authorizes the use of fireworks should consider the following safety tips: - Store fireworks safely in a cool, dry place. Check the instructions for special handling and storage requirements. - Never allow young children to play with fireworks. Sparklers considered safe will burn at 1,800 degrees, which is hot enough to ignite clothing. - Children should only be allowed to use fireworks with close adult supervision. - Always light fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from structures. - Never light fireworks around flammable materials. - Never light fireworks in a glass or metal container as shrapnel from these containers can cause injuries or death. - Never try to re-light or handle a malfunctioning firework; douse these fireworks with water and discard them. - Keep a bucket of water available for emergencies. - Never experiment, modify or attempt to make fireworks. - Don't wear loose clothing; it can easily catch on fire. - Light fireworks one at a time. - Don't use alcohol or drugs with fireworks. - In case of an emergency, know the emergency reporting number in the area. The emergency reporting number for Hanscom residents is 9-1-1 and 9-9-1-1 from base facilities. Those who have questions should call the Fire Prevention Office at (781) 377-6688 or (781) 377-3330.
