The Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Compliance Assessment Management Program team recently briefed Hanscom leadership on its assessment of the base. While an internal Hanscom team conducts annual ESOHCAMP assessments, an AFMC team conducts inspections every third year.
The AFMC team evaluated Hanscom's level of compliance with all applicable federal, state, Department of Defense and United States Air Force regulations in the major environmental, safety and occupational health protocols.

Evaluated protocols include air emissions, cultural resources, hazardous waste and materials, water quality, solid waste, wastewater, natural resources, pesticides, petroleum, oil and lubricants, storage tanks, toxic substances, blood borne pathogens, confined space entry, ionizing radiation, environmental management systems, laboratory practices and other issues involving radon, polychlorinated biphenyls and asbestos.

Hanscom's environmental and occupational health programs received a rating of Good and the safety programs received an overall rating of Satisfactory. Strong support from leadership, knowledgeable and hard-working staff and early improvement plans were all cited as program strengths. Suggestions for improvement included more frequent inspections and safety reviews.

"This team included very highly qualified volunteers from across the command," said Don Morris, Civil Engineering Environmental director. "Their looking at our programs made it more than just an inspection; they gave us the highest level of review. We received the best rating, but they also offered excellent advice on how we could improve. We really appreciate that -- it gives us a better feeling for where we are with our programs."

"The ESOHCAMP programs have been integral in making Hanscom a better place to live and work," said Col. Tom Schluckebier, 66th Air Base Wing commander. "I appreciate the efforts of all those who have worked so hard to make these programs successful."
