Hanscom to host Air Force 60th Anniversary events Published March 16, 2007 By Meredith March 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Hanscom AFB -- The U.S. Air Force will officially turn 60 in September. As part of a year-long celebration of this birthday, the following anniversary events will take place on Hanscom or in surrounding communities in March and April: March 23 Air Force History Room Dedication: Artwork representing memorable eras in Air Force history will be displayed in the Minuteman Club's Concord Room, which will be dedicated as the Air Force History Room in a 4:30 p.m. ceremony. Honorary Commander Induction: Immediately following the history room dedication, Peter B. Zimmerman, Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government Public Policy senior associate dean lecturer, will be installed as honorary commander of the 554th Electronic Systems Wing. Washer Tournament: The Washers Tournament will be held in the Minuteman Club Ballroom from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Teams of four players can sign up by calling the 66th Services Squadron at (781) 377-3901 by Wednesday. April 15 to 21 National Library Week: The Hanscom Library is sponsoring the Bookmark Design Contest in honor of National Library Week and the Air Force 60th anniversary. Beginning April 1, participants will design bookmarks with an Air Force 60th anniversary theme and submit them to the library for display during library week. During an open house at the library from 3 to 5 p.m. April 20, the Hanscom community is invited to view the bookmarks and vote for their favorites. The winning bookmark will be duplicated and distributed at the retirees' and kids' events, held April 28. Participants should note that multi-dimensional entries will be accepted and displayed, however, only flat bookmarks may be reproduced. April 16 n Boston Marathon Fly-over: Two F-15 Eagles from the Massachusetts Air National Guard 102nd Fighter Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base, will perform a fly-over above the Boston Marathon starting line in Hopkinton at 11:50 a.m., 10 minutes prior to the start of the race. The planes will fly the entire marathon route, finishing over Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. April 28 Retirees' Day: Hanscom's Air Force 60th Anniversary Committee will conduct video recording sessions for a living history project at the Minuteman Club April 27 and 28, as well as on May 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Military and civilian retirees are invited to share their Air Force memories on camera and possibly appear in a video to be shown at September's Air Force Ball here. For the time leading up to the Air Force's 60th birthday, the Hansconian will be looking for story ideas about interesting people, places and programs that have influenced the history of Hanscom.
