HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Children enrolled in youth programs here will soon benefit from a digital literacy grant focused on esports programming.
The grant, sponsored by Comcast, provides funding to advance technology and digital skills training. As a member of the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs, Hanscom’s youth program has been awarded $6,538 to pay for comprehensive esports and digital literacy programs.
The money will be used to purchase gaming equipment, online games and create gaming activities that promote sportsmanship, critical thinking and resilience for the youth center and school age care program.
“This is more than just kids playing video games,” said Colleen Davis, 66th Force Support Squadron youth programs director. “Participation helps youth and teens develop fine motor skills, strategic planning, social-emotional skills and teamwork. Gaming together also teaches youth how to lose while remaining respectful, kind and optimistic.”
Boys and Girls Clubs are designed to empower youth to excel in school, become good citizens and lead healthy, productive lives.
More than 140 children are enrolled in Hanscom’s youth center and school aged care program.
“Hanscom’s youth center has a lot of wonderful programs and activities,” Davis said. “We encourage people to stop by for a tour and learn about everything we have to offer.”
The youth center is in building 1993 and provides a variety of services and activities for kids ages 9 to 18. Call 781-225-6043 for enrollment information.
