HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The workforce here is encouraged to plan ahead to help ease the transition of returning to in-person work Feb. 6.

“We are working diligently to plan for a safe and smooth commute to work this week,” said Maj. Benjamin Doerfler, 66th Security Forces commander. “Please be patient with our defenders and other drivers due to increased traffic at the gates and in the surrounding communities. Overall, our main priority is to ensure the safety and security of our workforce, residents and installation.”

Gate hours

  • The Sartain Gate at Hanscom Drive is open 24/7.
  • The Ruiz Gate at Hartwell Avenue is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day, except federal holidays.
  • The Visitor Control Center at the Sartain Gate is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on AFMC family days from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The VCC is closed on federal holidays.

Traffic delays

Expect backups and delays at the Sartain and Ruiz gates and surrounding roadways during peak commute times.

Rideshare and mass transit subsidies

Military and civilian federal employees have several commuter and rideshare options when traveling to-and-from the installation. Officials encourage the use of vanpools, shuttle services and mass transit, as schedules allow.

REAL ID

Visitors requesting access to military bases and some federal installations will be required to present a REAL ID compliant credential beginning May 7. Federal employees, military members, dependents, military retirees, contractors and base residents may still use their common access card or Uniformed Services Identification card to enter the installation.
