HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The 66th Security Forces Squadron will commemorate National Police Week here May 12-16 with a series of installation-wide events.
Established in 1962, National Police Week is an annual observance recognizing the service of law enforcement officers across the nation.
“This week is a moment of reflection and remembrance of the sacrifices law enforcement officers have made,” said Staff Sgt. Katelyn Winther, noncommissioned officer with 66 SFS. “It is important to continue to celebrate their memories.”
Events scheduled for Hanscom AFB National Police Week include:

The impact of National Police Week is felt locally for the Defenders of the 66 SFS. Three of the 15 fallen Defenders who lost their lives during the Global War on Terror were deployed from Hanscom AFB. Senior Airman Kcey Ruiz, Senior Airman Nathan Sartain, and Senior Airman Jason “Khai” Phan are forever memorialized as the namesakes of the installation gates and the Military Working Dog Obedience Yard.
“This brings awareness to our job because it’s not just about the mission,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Luis, noncommissioned officer with 66 SFS. “Our lives are at risk. There are a lot of emotional ties to this, and we all feel for each other.”
Winther said local state and federal law enforcement partners are also invited to attend the events aimed at strengthening community bonds.
“In order for law enforcement to be effective, you need community involvement,” she said. “That’s true both on- and off-base. These events strengthen those bonds.”
