Military working dogs’ honored for their service

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Security Forces Squadron honored Military Working Dogs Dora and PPhan during a retirement ceremony held here May 9.

The ceremony included final radio calls and the presentation of the Military Working Dog Certificate of Meritorious Service to each by Maj. Benjamin Doerfler, 66 SFS commander.

“These dogs have served with unwavering loyalty,” said Tech. Sgt. Nicole Moodie, 66 SFS kennel master. “Their contributions have been critical to the safety and security of our installation and personnel.”

MWD PPhan arrived at Hanscom AFB Oct. 19, 2022, serving as a Patrol Explosive Detector Dog.

He is the namesake of Senior Airman Jason Phan, a 66 SFS Defender who was killed in a non-combat related accident during a deployment in 2020. MWD PPhan is retiring due to breathing complications during physical activity and will be adopted by his first handler, Staff Sgt. Jayson Page.

MWD Dora has served at Hanscom since Sept. 28, 2020, also as a Patrol Explosive Detector Dog. She is also retiring due to medical concerns and will be adopted by her last handler, Moodie.

“It’s a bittersweet moment,” said Moodie. “We build strong bonds with these dogs, and while we’re sad to see them retire, we’re thankful they’re going to loving homes.”

Air Force Military Working Dogs support Department of Defense missions worldwide. The dogs are trained in detection of explosives or narcotics, patrol, and handler protection. These canines and their handlers form elite teams, providing vital security capabilities at home and abroad.

As both Dora and PPhan officially retire, SFS leaders said they leave behind a legacy of excellence and devotion to duty.

“We thank them for their service,” said Doerfler. “Their impact on the mission and the people of this base will not be forgotten.”

The retirement ceremony marked the end of their military service and the beginning of a well-earned life of rest.
