HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Air Base Group here, part of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, plays a vital role in the Air Force’s warfighting capabilities.
What.We.Do. spotlights the units and organizations that make up Hanscom Air Force Base.
In this edition, members of the 66th Security Forces Squadron explain how they contribute to the installation and support the warfighter.
Operations Flight
The members of Operations Flight protect and defend the installation through law enforcement activities such as controlling the entry points, patrolling, and handling military working dogs.
“You see us every day when you come through the gate,” said Airman 1st Class Nicholas Peters, 66 SFS patrolman. “We check IDs, conduct random vehicle searches and ensure that people coming on base are authorized to do so.”
In addition, defenders help coordinate and support special events on base.
“The squadron definitely places a big emphasis on community outreach,” Peters said. “Being a part of a community and knowing that they entrust us with their safety is very fulfilling.”
Logistics Flight
The Logistics Flight and its personnel are responsible for purchasing and maintaining a wide array of equipment to support SFS operations.
“We find what we need, buy it, maintain it, put it in the right accounts, and get it out to the flight members or the other sections,” said Senior Airman Britton Auxier, SFS vehicle control officer and IT custodian.
Logistics is critical because it provides the essential gear and equipment the Operations Flight needs to execute its mission.
“Anything that involves vehicles, readiness, day-to-day operations, IT equipment or deployment gear -- we purchase or maintain it,” said Auxier.
Command Support Staff
The Command Support Staff provides administrative and personnel program support.
“We make sure that decorations are sent to our members on time, evaluations are completed, and physical fitness is tracked,” said Staff Sgt. Eduardo Gloria, NCO in charge of the Command Support Staff. “What we do is essential because a majority of our tasks directly affect an Airman's career.”
In addition to the administrative duties, the Command Support Staff ensure that everyone is prepared in case of an emergency.
“We ensure safety standards are being met across the Air Base Group,” he said. “We make sure we are following all the requirements and criteria are being met for our unit control center and our emergency operation center.”
Plans and Programs
The members of the Plans and Program section maintain physical security, installation access, anti-terrorism, the alarm systems, and law enforcement reports.
“We are the ones behind the scenes who really make the unit and the functionality of installation security run,” said Staff Sgt. Steven Lucey, NCO in charge of Plans and Programs.
The section also coordinates directly with higher headquarters and then advises the commander and operations on security matters.
“This has been one of the best teams that I've ever been a part of,” he said. “It is one of the most unique and supportive roles you could have.”
