HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- As summer heats up on base, many service members and their families are gearing up for training rotations, permanent change of station moves, vacations, and plenty of outdoor fun.

The 66th Medical Squadron dental clinic provides the following tips so you and your loved ones can keep oral health on track through the summer months.

Due to increased activity in the summer sun, more water is essential for oral health. Staying hydrated helps prevent dry mouth and supports healthy saliva which naturally protects teeth.

To encourage children to choose water over juice or soda especially during outdoor play, try to make it fun with a special water bottle or fruit-infused water.

Whether you're heading to the field, taking a road trip, or just managing a busy summer schedule, keep a basic dental kit handy. A toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss or floss picks can go a long way.

For families on the go, plan to keep a travel set in the car or suitcase.

It’s important to remind children to brush twice a day, even during vacations or sleepovers.

The summer months are peak PCS season. As you're checking off your moving to-do list, don’t forget dental care.

The Hanscom AFB Dental Clinic provides for one cleaning per year for active-duty service members only, plan to schedule your appointments before you move if possible.

Summer is also full of fun foods like barbecue and ice cream. These can be hard on teeth, especially for children. After sugary or acidic foods, rinse with water or offer a piece of sugar-free gum to neutralize acids.

Look for healthier options that support dental health such as crunchy fruits, cheese, nuts, and veggies.

If you or your child is involved in summer sports, mouthguards are a must. They help prevent dental injuries during contact sports and high-impact activities.

The Dental Clinic offers custom-fit options for active duty service members and can also advise on the best style for your needs.

Take advantage of school breaks to schedule kids' cleanings and exams early, before the back-to-school rush. If you or your spouse are overdue for a dental checkup, summer’s a great time to get it done. This can be accomplished either on base or with a civilian provider, depending on coverage.

The base dental team is proud to support active duty service members to readiness both on and off duty.

Maintaining good oral health is part of overall wellness, and the dental clinic is here to help you stay in shape, smile first.

The clinic can help make the process easy for the whole household.
