HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Members of The Lantern: Hanscom Collaboration and Innovation Center recently participated in Cyber Yankee 2025, an annual multi-state cyber defense exercise hosted by the New Hampshire National Guard.
The exercise aimed to strengthen regional cyber resilience across New England.
“The hands-on engagement and operational realism made Cyber Yankee an exceptional opportunity for learning and collaboration,” said Christopher Carrero, The Lantern technical director. “It’s clear this isn’t just an annual event, it’s a force multiplier for building a resilient cyber workforce.”
Held at the Edward Cross Training Complex in Pembroke, N.H., in May, the event brought together military cyber defenders, civilian agencies, utility companies, and industry partners to respond to simulated cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure.
Carrero highlighted the value of integrating operational technology operators, municipal utilities, and Army and Air National Guard members into the exercise environment.
The inclusion of these teams reflects a growing understanding of cybersecurity as a shared responsibility across public and private sectors, he said.
Cyber Yankee also drew support from New Hampshire state and military leadership, including Massachusetts Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Gary Keefe.
“Their presence sends a strong signal that senior leadership is not only invested but actively shaping the future of cyber defense,” said Carrero.
Looking ahead, Hanscom AFB officials are exploring ways to support future Cyber Yankee exercises through planning assistance, facility access, and realistic training scenarios.
Efforts are underway to develop a collaborative roadmap through 2028, with the aim of improving simulation environments, integrating advanced tools, and fostering continuous cyber readiness.
“This exercise aligns directly with the installation’s mission to support our community and mission partners,” said Lt. Col. Giancarlo Moats, 66th Air Base Group Information Protection office. “We look forward to partnering with the Massachusetts Guard and others to advance the state of cyber defense regionally and nationally.”
Cyber Yankee remains a leading example of integrated defense, bridging gaps between military, government, and private-sector partners to secure critical infrastructure in an increasingly contested digital environment.
