HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – September is National Preparedness Month, and base officials are highlighting the importance of planning for emergencies.
This year’s theme, “Building Readiness: Kit & Plan,” emphasizes the importance of protecting both the mission and the well-being of personnel.
“Every Airman, Guardian, civilian, and family member here has a role to play in readiness,” said Abraham Ashley, 66th Civil Engineering Division EM Program Manager. “Whether it’s knowing evacuation routes, building a kit, or practicing communication plans, these actions ensure we can respond quickly when the unexpected happens.”
For the installation commander, emergency preparedness is both a top priority and a shared responsibility.
“A collective approach is essential to ensure we are prepared for any crisis,” Col. Jorge Jimenez wrote in a memo to members of the workforce. “I encourage everyone to understand potential installation hazards, build a comprehensive emergency kit, develop a personal and family emergency plan, and participate in local preparedness initiatives.”
In New England, the unexpected can come in many forms. Severe winter storms, coastal flooding, hurricanes, and nor’easters routinely threaten the region, while ice storms and high winds can cause widespread power outages.
Base officials encourage families to update emergency supply kits with items suited to New England’s climate, such as extra blankets, flashlights, and nonperishable food.
Ashley emphasized that individual preparation is vital.
“Our emergency services team is highly trained and well-equipped, but resilience starts at home,” he said. “When families prepare, they not only protect themselves, they also free up first responders to focus on the mission and those most in need.”
