Base officials will host an observance ceremony here Sept. 11 to remember the events of 9/11.

The ceremony will take place outside the Minuteman Commons at 8:30 a.m. The program will include several speakers, an invocation from the base chaplain, and the tolling of a bell at the exact moment that the attacks began.

“This remembrance signifies the role that first responders played in the events of that day and honors all those who lost their lives,” said Staff Sgt. Natasha Brooks, 66th Medical Squadron flight medical technician and one of the event organizers.

Ceremony participants will observe the moments 24 years ago when hijacked airliners crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

This was the deadliest terrorist attack ever carried out on U.S. soil, killing 2,977 people and injuring thousands more. Among the victims were 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held inside the Commons. Anyone with base access is welcome to attend.
