HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The town of Bedford will celebrate its 296th birthday with a town day celebration Sept. 20.
Bedford Day is held annually on the third Saturday in September to observe the town’s incorporation. Base and area residents are invited to participate in events and activities.
“We consider Hanscom residents an integral part of the Bedford community and this is a day to celebrate them, too,” said Nikki Taylor, Bedford Recreation assistant director and event organizer. “We love to see them out in the community and participating in events.”
The festivities kick off with a 5K road race followed by a parade along Great Road, a fair in the town center, and an evening fireworks display.
- 8:30 a.m. – 5K road race
- 10:30 a.m. – parade
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – fair in the town center
- 7:30 p.m. – fireworks display
Emily Mitchell, Bedford Citizen of the Year, is guest of honor for the parade.
More than 180 local groups and businesses are expected to participate in the fair with karate demonstrations and cheer performances taking place on the town center lawn.
Organizers said the best viewing area for the fireworks is the grassy area between Bedford Town Hall and Bedford High School.
Spectators are asked to arrive no earlier than 6 p.m.
“This is a great way to come out and celebrate with the community,” Taylor said. “From kids to adults, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
Free parking for all events is available in the lots at the Bedford Free Public Library and John Glen Middle School
Attendees should check the town’s website for road closures during the road race and parade.
Bedford was incorporated on Sept. 23, 1729, and has grown from 50 to nearly 6,000 households.
