HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Installation Restoration Program here will be conducting its next phase of soil boring completion associated with its investigation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The objectives of the remedial investigations are to characterize PFAS in the environment as related to historic Air Force use of firefighting foam.

Soil boring activities will be performed by drilling with a rotosonic drill rig and a direct push rig to collect soil and groundwater samples. The drill rigs will generate a periodic hammering sound as the steel casing is driven into the ground.

Drilling locations will be on Hanscom AFB, Hanscom Field and in neighboring areas in the Towns of Bedford and Lexington. Work will be conducted weekdays between Jan. 5 to Jan. 23, 2026 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
