Rice confirmed as ANG director Published May 2, 2016 HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Massachusetts National Guard is pleased to announce that Maj. Gen. L. Scott Rice was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 28, 2016, to serve as director, Air National Guard, National Guard Bureau, Washington D.C., and to receive his third star. "I applaud General Rice on his confirmation as the director of the Air National Guard after 35 years of loyal and dedicated service as an Airman, and strong and steady leadership as the adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard," said Gov. Charlie Baker. "General Rice has ensured our 9,000 Soldiers and Airmen have been accessible, capable and ready to protect the Commonwealth and nation and his record makes him exceptionally qualified to lead the critical mission of the Air National Guard." "I'm honored and humbled to be chosen to lead the outstanding Airmen of the Air National Guard," Rice said. "I look forward to working with Air Force leaders and the adjutants general to shape our force for the future." In his new role, Rice will be responsible for formulating, developing and coordinating all policies, plans and programs affecting more than 105,000 Guard members and civilians in more than 90 wings and 175 geographically separated units across 213 locations throughout the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. Rice has served as flight, squadron, group, wing commander, air commander and the adjutant general of the Massachusetts National Guard. During that time Rice deployed seven times to locations including Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Oman and Pakistan. Prior to joining the Massachusetts National Guard, Rice, was on Active Duty from May 1981 to November 1989. Rice will continue to serve as adjutant general of Massachusetts until he receives his orders for his new assignment. Rice is currently responsible for the strategic direction, administration and operation of the Massachusetts National Guard to support national security objectives overseas as well as protect life and property and preserve peace, order and public safety as directed in times of natural disaster and civil emergency within Massachusetts.
