Woodhouse first joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and completed Officers Candidate School in 1946, at the age of 19. Woodhouse served as finance officer for the Tuskegee Airmen 477th Bombardment Group at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio. When discharged from active duty in 1949, he joined the Air Force Reserves.
