The Combined Federal Campaign will begin here Oct. 12 with a goal to raise $150,000. The annual campaign will continue through Nov. 20.

According to its website, the CFC mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

"The Combined Federal Campaign is a wonderful way for federal employees to make a difference in their community," said 2nd Lt. Jennifer Johnsen, who along with Tech. Sgt. Justin Morrison, is a CFC installation project officer. "There are more than 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations currently listed in the CFC booklet that employees can either make a one-time donation to or they can choose to donate each pay period."

Hanscom AFB is part of the CFC of Eastern Massachusetts, which includes other local federal organizations in the region such as the National Park Service, U.S. Postal Service and others.

Johnsen highlighted the many ways Hanscom employees can contribute to this year's campaign.

"There is an online pledge option available through the Defense Finance and Accounting Service's MyPay website, which most people already use to view their federal leave and earnings statements," she said.

A link to the "Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)" has been added under "Pay Changes" on the first page of MyPay after log in. Donors will need to enter the contribution amount per pay period and then enter the Eastern Massachusetts campaign code of 0427. MyPay provides a "Name Search," Category Search," or "Advanced Search" for employees to find a charitable organization during the MyPay donation process.

Hanscom employees may also visit the CFC of Eastern Massachusetts website at http://easternmasscfc.org for a nationwide list of charities that employees can search through.

In addition to the MyPay option, federal employees have other options for giving. They may choose to deduct a certain amount from each paycheck or give a one-time donation. If employees choose a payroll deduction, they may either fill out a pledge card or use MyPay. Those that choose to contribute a one-time donation will need to fill out a pledge card with their unit CFC representative.

After meeting with unit CFC representatives earlier this week, Johnsen said information will soon be provided to employees by the representatives during commander calls, staff meetings and at unit CFC fundraising events.

"It is our goal to make 100 percent contact with the entire federal workforce on base," she said.

Federal employees have given more than $7 billion since the campaign's inception more than 50 years ago.

"Last year, 70 percent of all the donations came in through paperless means, and that provided about $1.5 million worth of management handling savings that went straight to the charities," said Michael L. Rhodes, DoD's director of administration and management via a Department of Defense release.

CFC began in the 1960s to coordinate the fundraising efforts of various charitable organizations so that federal donors would only be solicited one time per year in the workplace. It also offers the opportunity to make a charitable contribution through payroll deduction.
