Enlisted members from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard accomplished the first step in professional training, development and schooling of service members in the armed forces during an Airman Leadership School graduation ceremony at the Minuteman Commons July 31.

The school is an Air Force Professional Military Education class designed to develop junior enlisted members into effective front-line supervisors. The curriculum focuses on developing leadership abilities, as well as effective communication. Much of the instruction focuses around various Air Force rules and regulations.

Ten Airmen and two Coast Guard E-4s completed the Hanscom-based five-week ALS course.

Master Chief Dale C. Steinmetz, command master chief for the First Coast Guard District in Boston, was the guest speaker during the Class 15E graduation ceremony.

Three students were recognized during the ceremony as top performers throughout the past five weeks.

Senior Airman Alyssa R. Arriaga, 58th Aerial Port Squadron, Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., was awarded the John L. Levitow Award. This award is presented to the student who achieves the highest overall standing from a combination of academic scores, performance evaluation and leadership qualities. It's the highest honor awarded to a PME student.

The Academic Achievement Award recipient was Senior Airman Lloyd N. Ashong, 143rd Civil Engineer Squadron, Quonset Point Air National Guard Station, R.I. This award is presented to the top student who achieves the highest summative scores throughout the class and who displays all characteristics of an effective leader and fostered teamwork within the training environment.

Senior Airman Kory D. Pelletier, 66th Security Forces Squadron, was named the Commandant Award winner. This award is presented to a student who displays all the characteristics of an effective leader, but is not based on academic performance. The ALS commandant is the final determining factor who is presented this award.

Other students completing the course are as follow:

Senior Airman Keith M. Austin, 6th Space Warning Squadron, Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass.
Senior Airman Bianca C. Correa, 66th Security Force Squadron, Hanscom Air Force Base
Senior Airman Carl S. Ditty, 64th Refueling Squadron, Pease Air National Guard Base, N.H.
