SFS to host annual Police Week activities Published May 5, 2015 By 66th Security Forces Squadron HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Security Forces Squadron will host several events on base as part of this year's annual Police Week scheduled May 11-15. Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers around the country who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which that date falls as "National Police Week." The weeklong recognition kicks off May 11 at 8 a.m. with opening remarks by Lt. Col. Michael Morales, 66 SFS commander, near Gate 2 off Randolph Road. Members of the community are invited to participate in a 5k run/walk that will follow. Because the 5k course is largely off base, participants are asked to bring their ID cards to reenter the base. Parking for those interested in attending will be outside Building 1103. The 66 SFS Military Working Dog section will showcase their abilities to the community at the softball field by the Hanscom schools on Wednesday, May 13 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. For further information about this activity, contact Staff Sgt. Victor Portes-Garcia at 781-225-6593. Additionally from 12 to 3 p.m. on May 13, SFS personnel will be outside the Base Exchange conducting a weapons display in the parking lot. The community is invited to participate in the hands-on display that security forces Airmen use on a day-to-day basis. On Friday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m., a retreat ceremony will take place at the POW/MIA memorial area on base. This event will feature Lexington Police Chief Mark Corr as the guest speaker. For further information on this event, contact Staff Sgt. Jennifer Starr at 781-225-5626. For information on any of the scheduled events throughout Police Week, contact Tech. Sgt. John Mikolaj at 781-225-5613.
