College planning night scheduled on base Published Jan. 25, 2015 By Mark Wyatt 66th Air Base Group Public Affairs HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Officials on base have partnered with Bedford High School to hold a College Planning Night at the Airman and Family Readiness Center Feb. 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. for high school juniors interested in attending college. This presentation with the Hanscom school liaison specialist and Bedford High School guidance counselors will touch on all phases of the college selection process for parents and students to consider between now and the end of next summer. "Many times it's difficult for parents to get out to the high school during the week, so through community events such as the College Planning Night in February, high school representatives will be on base for this first-ever college planning event for our military families," said Laurel Wironen, 66th Force Support Squadron school liaison specialist. "Together we have been working hard to increase the high school's presence on base." Amie Capodanno, Bedford High School director of guidance, and Brian DeChellis, Bedford High School guidance counselor assigned to Hanscom students, will be on hand to meet with families. "I hope that this presentation will serve as a starting point in the college planning process, and will help students identify areas where they need to learn more," said Capodanno. "Guidance counselors will have a folder ready for each junior that will be full of useful college planning information." Guidance counselors have also scheduled Jan. 26, 27 and 29 during Social Studies classes as an opportunity for juniors to meet with counselors to discuss Naviance College Search Tools on Naviance.com, a college and readiness tool for middle and high schools that help connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals. In addition, the Bedford High School College Fair is scheduled March 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for students and parents to meet with the more than 100 college representatives scheduled to attend. The College Planning Night open to students attending Bedford High School. Those interested in attending Feb. 24 are asked to contact Wironen at 781-225-2765 to reserve a seat.
