JPPSO passes along summer moving tips Published July 22, 2014 Joint Personal Property Shipping Office Northeast, Det. 2 HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- With the busy summer moving season in progress, the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office would like to pass on some key moving tips to the base community. The Defense Personal Property System, or DPS, provides direct and empowered communications between the servicemember and the Transportation Service Provider. DPS is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year from any location with internet access. A DPS account must be established to process and manage a shipment application, delivery request, file a claim and complete the customer satisfaction survey. Users may go to the www.move.mil website, once there access the DPS Login/Registration Process tab at the top of the page to create an account. All servicemembers moving throughout the summer should be aware of the high volume of moves through September, to include pickup, transportation and delivery. Movers should plan to be flexible when selecting a date for packing, pickup, and delivery. Never schedule a pickup or delivery on the closing date of a residence, on the last day of residency in an apartment, the day of termination of a lease or the day a cleaning crew is scheduled to start cleaning. A good move depends largely on how much the member gets involved and continues communication with their TSP. JPPSO personnel have created these helpful tips to assist servicemembers through the moving process. 1. Maintain current phone numbers and an email address in DPS. 2. Check email inboxes and spam folders prior to deletion for updates on a shipment or storage status. 3. New weight limits for professional books, papers and equipment went into effect May 1. Contact the transportation office for further information on limits. 4. If a servicemember has not been notified by a TSP 10 days prior to the requested move date, contact the transportation office. 5. Be sure to know when the storage expires; Storage in Transit is temporary and should not exceed 90 days. Additional storage is not automatic and must be requested at www.move.mil. 6. If property is in storage, remember the storage expiration date and provide the transportation office an update to prevent it from lapsing, which may result in out of pocket expenses. 7. If a servicemember is close to their maximum weight entitlement, JPPSO encourages the member to request a reweigh through DPS, also contact the TSP to verify the request. 8. If an individual has separated or retired and still has an impending need for a home of record or selection move, be sure to submit an extension request prior to initial time limit lapse. The request must include a reason for the delay and documentation substantiating the cause. 9. Direct delivery requests must be made on a shipment request and coordinated with the TSP. 10. Be sure to have alternate dates when arranging delivery from storage. Individuals are encouraged to contact their TSP as soon as possible. Those who have any further questions should contact the Personal Property Processing Office in Building 1217 via phone at 781-225-6399 or 781-225-6398 or contact the Customer Service Department, JPPSO-Northeast, at 800-235-7776 or781-225-6399.
