HSC awards scholarships Published May 22, 2014 By Lori Glenn Hanscom Spouses Club Scholarship Chair HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The Hanscom Spouses Club hosted nearly 100 people at the Minuteman Commons to recognize 17 graduating seniors and two military spouses at the 53rd annual HSC Scholarship Awards Night May 14. HSC officers awarded $35,000 in scholarships to graduates whose transcripts show mostly As and Bs, most of whom have attained honors in various subjects, and many who will major in technically-challenging disciplines in the top colleges and universities this fall. The top academically achieving student is awarded The Chief of Staff Award of $4,000. This year's recipient is Jason Canavan, who will attend Boston College in the fall. Other students were awarded special scholarships named in memory of those who were special to the Hanscom Community. Winners of those scholarships included: Noel Zamot, U.S. Air Force Academy, $2,000 - The Lieutenant General Chubb Award Bailey Donato, Bloomsburg University, $2,500 - The Jeanne M. Richter Memorial Award Ellen Roussel, Loyola University, $3,000 - The Brian D. Sweeney Memorial Award Alexander Knoedler, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, $4,000 - The Colonel Chuck Jones Memorial Award Other students awarded scholarships were: Seniors: Joseph Neveux (University of Maine), Morgan Gilberti (North Carolina State University), Jenna Ceteras (Gordon College), Matthew Fischetti (John Hopkins University), Danielle Gilbert (Savannah College of Art and Design), Hunter Gosney (Louisiana State University), Gabriella Brodeur (Westfield State University), Harold Hodge (University of Massachusetts-Amherst), Ryan Abele (New York University), Ashley Sarra (University of Maine), Emily Borger (University of Maine) and Charles Lipscomb (Bates College). Helen Angulo (Middlesex Community College) and Eva Roberts (Univeristy of North Carolina) are military spouses who were awarded scholarships at the event as well. The HSC raised $35,000 this year from many corporate donors and benefactors. Without these contributions, and the work by HSC members at the Thrift Shop, auction and scholarship committee, the HSC scholarship program would not be possible. Listening to the biographies of each student awarded a scholarship is said by all to be the inspiration for the hard work done by the committee and proof that our kids are succeeding. Over the past 53 years, starting in 1961, the Hanscom Spouses Club has offered scholarships to military dependent children. The intent of these scholarships is to support graduating high school seniors and spouses of members of any branch of the armed forces. The first award was for $250 to Fred M. Raskind from Boston English High.
