SFS to host annual Police Week activities Published May 2, 2014 By 66th Security Forces Squadron HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- In 1962, President Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The 66th Security Forces Squadron will host Hanscom's annual Police Week May 12 through 16. The week-long recognition begins with an opening ceremony May 12 outside Building 1725. Members of the community are invited to participate in a 5k run or walk following the ceremony. Participants may pre-register by contacting Staff Sgt. Patricia Anderson at 781-225-5617; registration will also be available on the day of the event. Parking for participants will be at Building 1103. On Tuesday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Security Forces is sponsoring a four-person golf tournament. Each hole will present a unique police-themed challenge to the golfer. The registration will begin promptly at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The cost is $75 per person, which includes 18 holes green fees, a cart and a hot lunch. This event will take place at the Patriot Golf Course located at 200 Springs Rd. adjacent to the Veteran's Administration Hospital. For further information, contact Staff Sgt. On Thursday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Security Forces personnel will be at the Base Exchange parking lot conducting an equipment display, rides in the SFS sky watch tower and vehicle display. The community is invited to participate in the hands-on display that Security Forces members use on a day-to-day basis. At 2 p.m., a retreat ceremony will take place at the POW/MIA memorial area, featuring Lincoln Police Department Chief Kevin A. Mooney as the guest speaker. A closing ceremony and charity barbecue is scheduled for May 16 at12 noon at Castle Park. Donations will be accepted with all proceeds going to the Air Force Security Police Association and National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund charities.
