Preparing for influenza season

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- The 66th Medical Squadron's Public Health office would like to remind people to protect themselves and their families from seasonal influenza.

Influenza is a contagious upper respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. It may cause mild to severe illness, and in severe cases, may lead to death.

The transmission of the virus usually takes place through the air from person-to-person. Others may also get the flu by touching a surface or object contaminated with flu virus and then touching their mouth, eyes or nose. Symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

The best way to prevent spreading the flu virus is through good hand hygiene. Regular hand washing before and after certain activities is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs to others. When soap and water are not available to remove germs, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Alcohol- based sanitizers can reduce the number of germs, but clinic officials say sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs.

Along with washing your hands, receiving the influenza vaccine will also aid in immunity against the flu. This year there is no FluMist because Centers of Disease Control (CDC) has deemed it ineffective.

The 66th Medical Squadron has received a limited supply of vaccinations only offered to deployers, first responders and active duty units stationed at Hanscom at this time.

Public Health is working with unit health monitors to discuss when flu shots will be available to others. When the clinic receives more shipments, Public Health will notify those eligible.

Geographically separated units, beneficiaries and retirees have the option to receive Tricare-approved flu vaccination through local pharmacies.

For those who experience flu-like symptoms, clinic officials suggest seeing a healthcare professional as soon as able.

Supervisors and commanders may grant military members up to 24 hours sick status at their discretion. The clinic does not have sick call and only utilizes appointments.

To make an appointment, call 781-225-6789, option 1. Members may also make an appointment through MiCare at https://app.relayhealth.com/.
