HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – The 66th Security Forces Squadron here is in search of volunteers to participate in “Halloween Watch,” a community initiative to ensure children trick-or-treating in base housing remain safe this Halloween.

Volunteers, along with personnel from the 66th Air Base Group Safety office and security forces, will patrol housing on foot throughout the evening to ensure a safe and incident-free event for children.

Hanscom trick-or-treating is scheduled Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.

It's also the time of year when parents should be aware of the dangers associated with trick-or-treating.

Here are a few tips for parents and children to remain safe this Halloween:

- Children are encouraged to carry a flashlight, glow stick or wear something brightly colored.
- Parents are encouraged to plan their child’s route and set a meeting place in case children get lost.
- If a child is wearing a mask, parents should ensure there is proper ventilation for breathing and visibility for sight.
- Children are encouraged to wear properly fitting shoes and costumes to avoid tripping.
- Parents should always inspect treats for signs of tampering before allowing a child to consume them.

To further ensure children remain safe, safety personnel will be walking through the Hanscom neighborhoods handing out free glow sticks.

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity is encouraged to contact the Law Enforcement Desk at 781-225-5000 or by calling Operation Crime Stop at 781-225-6920.
