Heritage of Freedom

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. –Morley Piper, a World War II veteran speaks during the Heritage of Freedom event on July 16, about his D-Day experiences as a 19 year old lieutenant in the 29th Infantry Division on June 6, 1944. Mr. Piper was a platoon leader in a rifle company assigned to the 115th Regiment where he led 30 men into battle on Omaha Beach and engaged the enemy through France and into Germany up until the end of World War II. The Heritage of Freedom event also included 1st Lt. Mike Sciortino of the 66th Medical Group who described how he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart working as a combat controller in Afghanistan. (U.S. Air Force photo by Mark Herlihy)
