Conscious Sedation

HANSCOM AFB, Mass. -- Dental Clinic personnel from the 66th Medical Group, along with 66th Air Base Wing Vice Commander Col. Jeffrey Mayo (far right), stand in the newly operational Conscious Sedation Dental Operating Room. The 66 MDG is now offering conscious sedation services with select dental procedures for active-duty servicemembers. Through conscious sedation, also known as ‘twilight sleep’ or ‘moderate sedation,’ a patient is given medication through an intravenous line in the arm or back of the hand. It induces a modestly depressed level of consciousness that minimizes pain and discomfort through the use of pain relievers and sedatives. (U.S. Air Force photo by Mark Wyatt.)
