HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – A member of the 66th Security Forces Squadron here recently learned he is the Air Force Materiel Command 2019 Air Force Sergeants Association Pitsenbarger Award recipient.

Tech. Sgt. Kyle Majorana, 66 SFS flight sergeant, received the award for actions while responding to a 911 call late last year on base.

“I was the initial on scene commander during a domestic call in base housing three days before Christmas,” Majorana said. “An intoxicated member was making serious threats toward a spouse and responding law enforcement personnel.”

The award recognizes an Air Force enlisted Airman who performed a heroic act, on or off duty, which resulted in the saving of life or prevention of serious injury.

Majorana, with help from other SFS personnel and the squadron’s commander at the time, Maj. Brett Skates, was able to defuse the situation with no injuries.

The sergeant has been a member of Air Force Security Forces since enlisting more than 12 years ago. He is currently the flight sergeant on the midnight shift at Hanscom AFB.

Majorana uses the experience to train other Airmen on his flight.

“We are responsible for securing the installation and protecting lives, those are our primary responsibilities,” he said.

Throughout his career in law enforcement, Majorana has experienced stressful situations, including a deployment overseas as a member of an explosive detection Military Working Dog team.

“Without question, the event last December was as stressful a situation as I ever hope to experience,” he said. “But professionalism by all responding law enforcement agencies, including local police departments and our commander, ensured that we prevented serious injury to those involved.”

The Pitsenbarger Award is in honor of Airman 1st Class William H. Pitsenbarger, an Air Force pararescueman who responded on April 11, 1966, to a call for evacuation of casualties incurred in an ongoing firefight between elements of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division and a sizeable enemy force in Vietnam.

AFSA presents the award annually to enlisted members, including those on active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve. The period of performance for this award is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018.
