HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – School-aged children attending the Hanscom Primary and Middle Schools began a new school year Aug. 28.

For those attending the primary school, this year will be in a new location, following completion of an 80,000-square-foot multi-story facility.

“We are very excited to welcome the students back to this fabulous, state-of-the-art facility,” said Julie Vincentsen, the school’s new principal.

The design fully integrates both the primary and middle schools, each operated by the Lincoln Public School system.

“The Hanscom campus provides a learning environment that matches our 21st century learning needs,” said Dr. Rebecca McFall, superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools. “The buildings provide students with a project-based learning environment that is engaging and encourages collaboration between students and amongst faculty.”

Officials completed construction on the middle school in 2016.

Both schools include 21st Century School concepts such as learning neighborhoods, central hubs surrounded by learning studios, flex labs, an information center annex, commons area for dining and social networking, therapy rooms, teacher work areas, counseling areas, storage, administrative offices and other required areas for a fully functioning facility.

The project was coordinated with the Department of Defense Education Activity, or DODEA.

Construction included related infrastructure such as parking areas and playgrounds. Site improvements such as signage, fencing, paving, landscaping, exterior lighting and utilities were also included.

The Hanscom AFB campus consists of a primary school for students in kindergarten through third grade and a middle school for students in fourth through eighth grade.

Lincoln school officials are planning an official ribbon cutting ceremony this fall to mark completion of construction.
