HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Members from the Hanscom Diversity and Inclusion cell are hosting ‘Ruck Against Racism’ here Aug. 28 at 8:30 a.m.
Organizers say the 2.5 mile event is open to all members of the Hanscom community to ruck or walk, and will serve as an opportunity for open discussion on diversity and inclusiveness across the base.
“There’s a discussion to be had here,” said Master Sgt. Mike Mathiesen, co-organizer for the event. “This felt like the most appropriate event to help move the conversation forward.”
Preregistration is required before the event to ensure organizers can facilitate proper physical distancing. Members can register at www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4dafa723a6ffc61-ruckracism.
All participants must wear face coverings. Signs and banners displaying political messages are not allowed, and only civilian clothes are permitted.
Participants will step off in waves, with each group having a team leader armed with talking points to generate conversation on tough subjects, said Tech. Sgt. Sarah Tamayo, event co-organizer.
“This ruck is really symbolic in itself,” she said. “We’re all carrying this weight, and by walking together across the base we can send the message there’s no room for racism in our community.”
Tamayo said volunteer positions are available for course guides, group leaders and more. Those interested can email Sarah.tamayo@us.af.mil.
“It’s easy to say ‘racism is bad,’ but it’s harder to look inward and ask yourself what your own biases may be,” said Mathiesen. “Our hope is to bring everyone together and keep the conversation going.”
