HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Hanscom volunteers and members of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts council assembled here May 14 for the Cookies for a Cause event.

Formerly known as ‘Operation Cookie Drop,’ this is an annual event the Girls Scouts hold across the nation, distributing donated boxes of their cookies to thank military service men and women for their service.

The Hanscom Warhawk First Sergeant Council worked with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts to coordinate the event and get the cookies delivered on base. They set up a distribution site in the Base Exchange parking lot, and before long, cars were lining up to get their favorite box of Girl Scout cookies.

For Team Hanscom members like Master Sgt. Sonia Teixeira, Joint Personal Property Shipping Office senior enlisted leader and the lead Hanscom coordinator for the event, hosting the event on base is important.

“Working alongside the scouts has been rewarding and is something we enjoy,” she said. “I was told how excited the Girl Scouts get and how they always look forward to coming on base to meet and greet military members. It is a testament to how the installation and local communities support each other.”

Over one hundred volunteers from Hanscom and the Girl Scouts participated in the event.

According to the GSEMA website, the Cookies for a Cause program is a way people can donate to military organizations, food pantries, first responders, and other local charities, while providing an opportunity for the scouts to deliver their donations in person to military members and veterans.

"Thank you Hanscom Air Force Base for being able to host this event,” said Jim Cronan, chief financial officer, GSEMA. “This helps us to teach our scouts how to give back to their community and celebrate our brave heroes.”

Hanscom has hosted Cookies for a Cause on base for many years, distributing thousands of boxes of cookies to military members and veterans groups. This year they distributed over 20,000 boxes of cookies to three military and veteran organizations in addition to Team Hanscom members.

“On behalf of the First Sergeant Council, we appreciate the Girl Scouts’ time and effort in collecting the cookie donations and their generosity,” said Teixeira.

Col. Katrina Stephens, installation commander, assisted in passing out boxes of cookies and expressed her appreciation to the participating scouts and volunteers as well.

"The relationship built and maintained between the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and Hanscom Air Force Base is truly amazing,” she said. “I am so humbled and honored that we are able to provide not only cookies, but also the support of our local partners to our deployed civilians, enlisted, and officers and their families."
