Author Sam Renick, and his "Sammy Rabbit" children's book character, will be coming to Hanscom Aug. 19 to teach children about the importance of saving money.

Thanks to a recently approved Integrated Delivery Systems (IDS) funding request, Sammy will be performing three free shows. The shows will include singing, dancing, free giveaways and question and answer sessions with Mr. Renick and Sammy Rabbit.

In 1998, Mr. Renick created the Sammy Rabbit character and published the "It's a Habit, Sammy Rabbit!" children's book, which teaches kids how to be financially smart. Since then, Mr. Renick and Sammy Rabbit have made over 500 appearances in front of 250,000 students in 30 states and six countries.

"These shows are a fun and interactive way for kids to learn about saving money," said Dan Mazzuca, Air Force Aid Society officer and Community Readiness consultant at the Airman and Family Readiness Center. "One of the weaknesses in financial literacy is that most educators don't target young children. Sammy does that, and he makes saving fun."

The first show, geared towards children ages 3 to 5, will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The second, for children over age 5, will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Both of these will take place at the Youth Center in the gym.

The third show, starting at 5 p.m., will be open to the entire Hanscom community and will be the only show with a picture and autograph session included. It will take place at the Minuteman Commons, formerly the Minuteman Club.
