Law Day educates on legal system Published May 4, 2007 By Meredith March 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Hanscom AFB -- The theme for May 1's Law Day was "Liberty Under Law: Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy." To help Hanscom youth understand America's legal process, the 66th Air Base Wing Legal Office and the Electronic Systems Center Legal Office teamed up to celebrate Law Day by staging a mock trial, the United States v. Bunyan, for Hanscom Middle School fifth graders. Paul Bunyan's Hanscom trial included accusations by federal agencies of various environmental infractions and nuisances. Legal office employees played the judge, defendant, lawyers and witnesses. The HMS students actively participated as the trial's jury and in other essential roles. "We wanted to teach the fifth graders about the democratic process -- to see what the judge, lawyers and jury does. They were the jury; they got to decide Paul Bunyan's fate," said Capt. Christopher Thompson, 66th Air Base Wing Military Justice chief. "I think they learned about the process and had a great time."
