Education, Training Center to host college fair Monday Published Dec. 15, 2006 By Theresa Feely 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Hanscom Air Force Base -- The 66th Mission Support Squadron Education and Training Flight will host a college fair Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Education and Training Center building. Representatives from 16 educational institutions will be available to discuss their programs. The event is open to all base personnel and residents. "Today's successes come from yesterday's learning and tomorrow's successes come from today's learning," said Joe Solivan, functional director of the government oversight team at the Education and Training Center. Increased income is one of the many advantages a college education provides. According to the U.S. Census Bureau Web site, http://www.census.gov the average income of a college graduate is almost twice that of an individual with a high school diploma. "Unlike most purchases, a college education appreciates in value rather than depreciates, and higher education boosts self esteem, increases career opportunities and advancement and provides improved quality of life for you and your family," said Mike Boudreau, Education and Training Center L-3 Communications Titan Group program manager. About the Education and Training Center: Winner of the Nathan Altschuler Award for Outstanding Education and Training Flight, Category 1-B in 2005, the 66 MSS Education and Training Flight provides educational guidance to military and civilian members of the base community, as well as those located at geographically separated units and Guard and Reserve servicemembers, Mr. Solivan said. The Education and Training Center staff members provide career counseling, educational guidance and information regarding tuition assistance options. One area that the center has particularly excelled in is providing testing assistance to those seeking Community College of the Air Force degrees. "Very successful, online study guides are available to students to help them prepare for CLEP and DANTES testing," said Cynthia Harris, education counselor and CCAF adviser. "Our education center boasted the second highest percentage of students completing CCAF degrees for 2005," Mr. Solivan said. Additionally, the center staff works closely with base training monitors to ensure that all necessary military and civilian career development courses are completed, Mr. Solivan said. In fact, Squadron Officer School boards and various schools' seminars, including Air War College seminars are held at the center, Mr. Solivan said. The Education and Training Center has also assumed responsibility for managing and administering the on-line Defense Language Proficiency Test 5. Paper-based testing under DLPT 1-4 continues to be conducted by the Military Personnel Flight's testing office. Three schools have offices within the Education and Training Center and offer classes on base. They are Boston University, Park University and Webster University. The Education and Training Center staff also works with approximately 200 other schools for students interested in online learning and distance programs.
