HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – 66th Civil Engineering Division officials remind residents and employees that dumpsters located throughout the installation are for official use only and should not be used for personal trash disposal.

The policy, designed to ensure proper waste management and support environmental compliance, restricts the use of base dumpsters to workplace-related trash.

“This is a matter of maintaining operational efficiency and environmental responsibility,” said Joshua Hussey, deputy chief of the 66th Civil Engineer Division Operations Flight. “Dumpsters on base are intended strictly for official use. When individuals use them for personal trash, it creates unnecessary strain on resources and risks non-compliance with waste management regulations.”

Residential garbage should be disposed of through regular trash collection services, while recycling materials should be placed in designated recycling dumpsters.

Recycling dumpsters are stationed across the installation to collect workplace paper, cardboard, plastics, and other recyclable materials.

“Recycling dumpsters are not for general waste,” said Dan Doherty, chief of the 66th Civil Engineer Division Operations Flight. “When people throw regular trash or other non-recyclable materials into recycling dumpsters, it can contaminate the entire load, making it unsuitable for processing.”

Base residents are encouraged to utilize their regular curbside trash and recycling collection services provided through their housing agreements.

For employees, workplace trash should be appropriately disposed of in designated dumpsters or bins. Items such as electronics, hazardous materials, and large bulky waste should be handled through proper disposal channels coordinated with the 66th Civil Engineering Division.

“Every member of Team Hanscom has a role to play in maintaining our base’s cleanliness and sustainability,” he said. “We ask everyone to do their part by following the rules and being mindful of what they throw away and where they dispose of it.”

Violations of the dumpster use policy may result in corrective actions, and base officials will begin to increase monitoring to curb misuse.
