HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- As winter weather sets in, safety officials here encourage personnel to prepare for the challenges that come with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.
Motorists must clear snow, ice or other obstructions from their vehicle, including windows, hoods, roofs and license plates.
“Take extra time to clear your vehicle completely, drive cautiously, and allow for greater stopping distances in winter weather,” Senior Airman Cordell Reed, 66 ABG safety specialist said.
The 66th Air Base Group Safety Office offers tips to help keep members of the workforce and their families safe.
“Clearing snow and ice from walkways, walking slowly, keeping your hands free, and wearing proper footwear can reduce your risk for accidents,” said Reed.
For those spending time outdoors, Reed advises dressing in warm, layered clothing and limiting exposure to extreme temperatures.
The Massachusetts website, Mass.gov provides the following tips for staying safe while driving during winter storms.
- Avoid driving during the worst part of the storm. If possible, only travel during daylight hours, don't travel alone, and stay on main roads instead of taking shortcuts.
- Consider taking public transportation.
- Don't try to out drive the conditions. Remember, posted speed limits are for dry pavement.
- Know the current road conditions. Call 511 from your cell phone for road conditions in your area.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers additional winter driving tips:
- Do not crowd snowplows.
- Use caution when attempting to pass a plow.
- Familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s safety technologies.
