In remembrance: former ESD Commander Chubb

Retired Lt. Gen. Melvin F. (Nick) Chubb, Jr., passed away July 25, 2014, after a short illness.

Chubb commanded what was then the Air Force's Electronic Systems Division at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., from August 1984 until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1988.
 
During his tenure at Hanscom, he oversaw development of the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, better known as Joint STARS, and many other accomplishments.

Chubb was born in Joplin, Mo., in 1934. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force in 1955 after completing aviation cadet training and went on to lead an illustrious military career marked by various operational, program management and command positions.

General Chubb was a command pilot with more than 5,000 flying hours and wore the missile badge. He completed 500 combat missions with 1,000 combat hours. His military decorations and awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 16 oak leaf clusters and Air Force Commendation Medal.

A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014 at 11 a.m.. at Suntree United Methodist Church, Melbourne, Fla. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
