Winter sports safety Published Jan. 16, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Shaun Bassett 66th Air Base Group Safety Office HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Winter activities are one of the leading causes of mishaps this time of year. While participating in winter sport activities, remember that safety matters. Here are some tips to better prepare for safely participating in winter sport activities. Proper attire for the activity: Be sure to wear the right personnel protective equipment, or PPE, for the sport or activity. Always wear a helmet when required and make sure it is properly fastened. Dressing in layers and wearing the right clothes for the activity is the best way to stay warm and prevent frostbite. Be sure equipment is in good working order and inspected prior to use. Knowing your limit: Many sports-related injuries are due to inexperience in that sport. If new to a sport, start slow and work your way up to the next level. Don't test out the expert level if you don't have the experience. Practice and training are keys to having fun and will help ensure any winter sport activity is done safely. Experience takes time and should not be rushed. Sober is the way to go: Staying sober while participating in winter sport activities will help prevent a serious mishap from occurring. It is never a good idea to participate in winter sport activities when under the influence of alcohol. Always have a plan: A good idea is to have a plan and let someone know where you are going. Always have a back-up plan and pack smart for the activity. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a first aid kit, healthy snacks and any other items that might be needed for that activity. Set the example: Wearing the proper PPE, proper clothing, knowing your limits, staying sober and having a good plan during winter activities is the best way to stay safe and prevent mishaps. By setting the example, it will help motivate others to want to be safe as well. For further information on staying safe this winter, contact the Safety Office at 781-225-5584.
