Domestic violence awareness

Domestic violence impacts a staggering number of people from every social and economic demographic each year.

It is estimated that one in every four women will experience some form of domestic violence over the course of her life. Since 2003, there have been 277 domestic violence homicide deaths in the state of Massachusetts alone. Despite an increased knowledge of the impact of domestic violence on individuals and families, studies reveal that very few domestic violence murder victims, and even fewer offenders, have ever received any kind of intervention or prevention services.

The impact of domestic violence does not simply end with the act of abuse. The cost of intimate partner violence reaches nearly $6 billion per year, with over $4 billion required for the medical and mental health treatment of victims of abuse. Family members are also affected in a profound manner, as men who witnessed domestic violence as children are twice as likely to become abusive partners as adults.

October was designated Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to remind everyone of the far reaching implications of domestic violence and to reinforce the value of prevention.

Communities throughout the country are taking this opportunity to acknowledge its impact on our families and future generations. The holiday season can be a very stressful time and this awareness month serves as an opportunity to reflect on the health of our own families and to better understand the resources that are available to support those in need.

As October comes to a close, it is important to remember that the prevention of domestic violence and efforts to improve the health of our families is a year round effort.

Hanscom Air Force Base Family Advocacy Program would like to remind the base community there are a number of services available right here on Hanscom, designed to help families and couples improve their health, communication, and safety.

Programs, at no cost to military beneficiaries, include couples' communication, parenting strategies, and family therapy.
