Janet Wolfenbarger Air Force Materiel Command Commander WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- It was nearly 150 years ago that our nation first observed a day of remembrance for those who died in service to the United States of America. Over the years, more than one million American Soldiers, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, Marines and Airmen have given their lives in defense of our great nation. We owe our freedom and a true debt of gratitude to the service and sacrifice of those who have come before us. Because Memorial Day has also become the unofficial kick-off to summer, the original intent of the day is sometimes diminished amid backyard barbecues. Regardless of what you have planned this weekend, I ask that you take a moment to honor all Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for your service.
